快猫短视频-Rieman College of Nursing & Health Sciences students develop and sharpen their patient care skills using exceptional technology in the College鈥檚 Simulation Lab.
But the latest addition to the college鈥檚 teaching tool belt is not found in that high-tech lab. In fact, this new item is 鈥渘o-tech.鈥 It鈥檚 a wooden and glass box sitting on top of a painted, steel pole, anchored in a cement foundation. It stands in front of the mobile home park at 36th and Maine streets on Quincy鈥檚 east side. Its purpose is as important to the education of student nurses as the lessons learned in the Simulation Lab.
It鈥檚 called the 快猫短视频 Box - a community food donation and distribution site - a place where people facing hunger find donated non-perishable food items.
How the 快猫短视频 Box came to be
During the pandemic, students of 快猫短视频-Rieman鈥檚 Community Health Nursing class identified a lack of food-related assistance on Quincy鈥檚 east side. Together students, faculty and staff developed a remedy for the situation.
The idea for the 快猫短视频 Box was born.
鈥淐ompassion,鈥 said Brenda Beshears, PhD, RN, college president and chief executive officer, about what the 快猫短视频 Box is teaching nursing students. 鈥淲e learn compassion by experiencing and participating in different activities.鈥
Three Quincy businesses joined the effort to develop the finished product 鈥 Plant Creative Wood Design, Michelmann Steel and Quincy Industrial Painting. 快猫短视频 Hospital鈥檚 Construction Department installed the 快猫短视频 Box.
鈥淚t鈥檚 part of the teamwork we have here at 快猫短视频-Rieman all the time,鈥 said Lila Warning, MSN, RN, CNE, assistant professor. 鈥淥ne person has a great idea and we all jump on board to help out.鈥 Lila helped identify and secure the location where the 快猫短视频 Box stands.
Since its installation in late June, the 快猫短视频 Box has been very busy. While anyone is welcome to place donations in the box 鈥 and have been doing so 鈥 students in 快猫短视频-Rieman鈥檚 Community Health Nursing class own the responsibility for ensuring the box remains full. Erika Knuffman, MSN, RN, CNE, instructor, says the experience will shape the way 快猫短视频-Rieman educated nurses see those for whom they care for the rest of their careers.
鈥淓very person has a story,鈥 said Erika. 鈥淥nce you hear that story and try to understand, it lets a wall down and you see the other person as a human. It鈥檚 part of building empathy and understanding, respect and dignity when you try to understand another person鈥檚 story.鈥
The 快猫短视频 Box satisfies more than hunger
The 快猫短视频 Box has touched everyone involved in the project. Tyler Plant is a 快猫短视频-Rieman graduate, 快猫短视频 Hospital nurse, and owner of Plant Creative Wood Design. He made the 快猫短视频 Box.
鈥淚 love giving back to the community that has helped me succeed in all aspects of my life,鈥 said Tyler. 鈥淚 thoroughly enjoy giving back, and it comes with a great deal of satisfaction.鈥
And when the 快猫短视频 Construction Department was finished installing the 快猫短视频 Box, they made sure to fill it - at their own expense - before heading back to the hospital.
鈥淥ur team filled the 快猫短视频 Box because 快猫短视频 Health System has provided us with great jobs that we all love,鈥 said Nathan Childress, CHC, 快猫短视频 Construction manager. 鈥淐onstruction team members understand how fortunate we are to be in a position to provide a hand up to others.鈥
鈥淲e want to give back in more ways than just education,鈥 concluded Dr. Beshears about the 快猫短视频 Box project. 鈥淲e want to be a contributing member of our community.鈥
